Nouns

Hello everyone!

We're going to start with some simple grammar. Today, we will be learning about nouns.

Nouns are people, places and things. Have a look around you now and you will see lots of nouns. Some might be people, like your grown-ups or siblings. Some might be places like your kitchen or bedroom. Some might be things like your computer or water bottle.

For your first challenge, see if you can find an A to Z of nouns where you are right now. That means you try to find one noun that starts with each letter of the alphabet (X is the toughest!). Make sure you get a grown-up to help you as you don't want to collect anything fragile or valuable. When you've found your A to Z, you can send us a list of your items or a photo to -  yr2@grange.harrow.sch.uk Good luck hunting for nouns!

There are two types of noun: common and proper. Common nouns are nouns that are not specific, there's lot of them and they are not unique. These can be people like firefighters, places like bathrooms or things like computers. Proper nouns are specific, there's only on them and they are unique. These can be people like Mr Deller, places like Paris or things like Playstation. You probably noticed that proper nouns start with a capital letter, this helps us show they are special and unique.

For your second challenge, see if you can spot the proper nouns in the sentences below. You'll probably notice that they have a capital letter. Be careful! One of the sentences is a trick and DOES NOT HAVE A PROPER NOUN! If you find the trick sentence then feel free to let us know.

1. Mr Deller likes strawberry ice-cream.
2. I have always wanted to visit Italy.
3. I like putting Ketchup on hot dogs.
4. You can get to France by plane or ferry.
5. My favourite Minecraft character is Steve.

Have a lovely day everyone and stay safe! Tomorrow we will be learning about plural nouns.
Mr D.
