Introduction

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the stories I received from Friday's learning. I'm still reading them all but I'll be saying well done to everyone who sent me in a story this week. Remember, you can send me work on classcharts or by the email, the email is the best way. Pause now for a reminder of the email address. For today's learning, you are going to need to download the file "Introductions Challenge Sheet" and you will need your Alien Design from yesterday's learning. if you didn't do yesterday's lesson, just check your email address for an email called Monday's Learning and you can do that lesson first. Pause now to download the files for today's lesson. You will also need to write today's LI. Make sure you read it, there's a challenge coming up about the LI in a moment. Pause now to write the date and li. Let's start with the warm up challenge. There is a list of the four main sentence types but I got the letters the

Beegu

Hello everyone, I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. This week, we are going to be reading a book called Beegu. I have emailed you a private link to the story, as it wouldn't really be kind to the author to put their whole book on youtube. Pause the video now and watch the video I have emailed you. You will need to write today's date and LI in your Home Learning Book. Pause on the next screen to copy the date and LI. Monday, 4th May LI - I can plan an information text This week we will be writing an information text about aliens. For my example, I am going to plan a text about Beegu but I would like you to plan a text about an alien you have made up. Let's start by thinking about what an information text is. Well, the clue is in the name! It gives us information! Does that make it fiction or non-fiction? An information text is non-fiction. I am sure you have read lots of information texts before, maybe about animals, places or things. We will be working more

Story Writing

Image
Hello everyone, Today, we are going to be doing our story writing. This video will probably be a bit longer than normal, so make sure to take a break in the middle if you are losing concentration or finding it tough. I am going to try and make it like we are in class doing writing together so remember to give yourselves about twenty to thirty minutes to do the writing, please don't spend hours and hours doing the writing because remember we want quality not quantity. First, let's get all things we will need for today's lesson. You will need the Story Map Parts 1,2, and 3, the Success Criteria and you will need the word list. You can find those in your email or on class charts. Today's learning is called Story Writing. Pause the video now to collect the things you need. Next, let's write our date and li. I hope you have a nice, sharp pencil for writing with as there's nothing worse than writing with a blunt pencil. Pause on the next screen, get that pencil

Descriptive Language

Image
Hello everyone, Before we start I'd like to say a massive WELL DONE! to Aynie. Aynie sent her story map and, to be honest, I thought it was actually better than my one. Aynie has given me permission to share it with you so if you keep watching all the way to the end of the video you can see Aynie's story map. Well done Aynie! Let's get ready for today's learning. You will need the have the Descriptive Language Challenge Sheet ready for today's lesson. It has all the activities and examples so it's really important you use it in today's lesson, you will also need your story map, home learning book and a pencil. Pause on the next screen to collect the things you need. We need to write today's date and LI. Pause on the next screen to write them down. When you are writing, think about what it means to be descriptive. I've definitely heard the word describe before but what does it mean? I've got a helper for our warm-up challenge t

Using Conjunctions

Image
Hello everyone, Before we start, I would like to say a massive well done to Joseph, Deanna and Amy for all the amazing work they've been doing. I'm going to start giving points on class charts as well for amazing work so make sure you login to class charts to see how many points you have. Joseph, Deanna and Amy have been emailing us work every single day to check on the school email address (yr2@grange.harrow.sch.uk). Today, we are going to be looking at conjunctions. You will need the Conjunctions Challenge Sheet. You should have received this on your email but if you haven't you can get it from class charts. This lesson is called Using Conjunctions. Pause on the next screen to make sure you have all the documents you need. You will also need to write today's date and LI in your home learning book, on a piece of paper or in a word document. Pause on the next screen to see the date and LI. Let's warm up with a little recap of what we've been working on t

Features of a Story

Image
Hello everyone! I hope you're all happy and well. Before we start, I'd like to say a huge well done to Afsheen, Andrada and Fahad for all the amazing work they've been doing. It's so great that I get so much lovely work from so many children in Year 2. Well done! Let's begin by downloading the files for today's lesson. Hopefully, most people got these by email, if you didn't make sure to get your grown-up to send an email to the school email address. The easiest way to get any downloads for the lesson is by visiting class charts. You can find everything for today's lesson there, it is the lesson called Features of a Story. Pause on the next screen to download the files for today's lesson. You'll also need to write the date and LI in your Home Learning book. If you have finished your home learning book or if you like using the computer you can do this is a word file, but make sure you are still practising your writing. Pause on the ne

Story Mapping

Hello everyone, Before we start with today's learning, you need to watch this video of Chris Haughton reading his book 'Shhh...we have a plan'. I won't be showing any pictures from the book in our videos but if you would like your own copy of the book it is available to buy online. Pause this video and watch the author reading his book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gy0FB2jFrFc&list=PLFtPjIfGAyJxRik7kNvW4Jc5rnad2nx7r&index=10 Today, we are going to make our own story map of 'Shh...We have a plan'. You'll need to write your date and LI, pause on the next screen to copy it down. Monday, 27th April LI - I can make a story map We need a success criteria for making a story map. Can you remember what it is? Pause on the next screen and see if you can remember the success criteria for a story map. If you think about story maps, we need to show what happens, what order it happens in and who it happens to. That's our success criteria. Pause

Full Stops

Hello everyone! Today we are going to work on another feature of writing that is simple but we can sometimes forget: full stops. We all know what full stops are - They come at the end of sentence to show us when it is finished. Sometimes we forget how important they are. On the next screen I have written some instructions for you without full stops. Pause on the next screen and try to follow them. Did you get a pencil and write the correct date and LI in your home learning book. If you did, well done! I'm sure you found it harder to follow the instructions without full stops though. That's what they are so important. If you haven't written the date and LI, pause on the next screen and copy them. Friday, 24th April LI - I can use full stops How do we know when a sentence is finished? It's a tricky question. If we are writing statements, a sentence is one thing that happened or a piece of information. I like carrots. That is a sentence with one piece of infor

Capital Letters

Hello everyone! Today we are learning about something that is quite simple but easy to forget: Capital letters. Before we start you will need your home learning books and a pencil, so grab those now. Now you will need to write the date and LI. They are on the next screen, so pause and you can copy them down. Thursday, 23rd April LI - I can use capital letters Now, you are ready for a starter challenge. I would like you to write all of the capital letters correctly from A all the way to Z. They are on the next screen so you can pause it and copy if there are any you are not sure about. If I asked you where you use a capital letter I think you could tell me; at the beginning of a sentence and for a proper noun. For your first challenge, we will practise using them at the beginning of a sentence. I have done some writing on the class charts page, blogpost and description that needs capital letters. I would like you to copy them out and add the capital letters where I forgot the

Contractions

Hello again! Today, we are going to learn about a different type of apostrophe. These apostrophes don't show us where someone owns something and they can't be confused for plurals. Did you spot them in that last sentence? Pause the video on the next screen to see if you can spot them. Of course, we are talking about contractions. To contract means to make smaller, we use them to put two words together and make them smaller. Here are some of the phrases you can turn into contractions. Do not Can not Should not Does not I am You are We are When we put two words together we remove one letter and replace it with an apostrophe. This is to show that a letter has been taken away, otherwise people might think it's a new word with a completely different meaning! Here are some examples, pause on the next screen to see them. Do not - - - Don't Can not - - - Can't Should not - - - Shouldn't Does not  - - - Doesn't I am  - - - I&#

Apostrophes of Possession

Hello everyone, First of all, I'd like to say well done to Sarah, Ammar and Aynie for all the amazing work they've been doing! Today, we are going to learn about apostrophes of possession. We use an apostrophe of possession when we want to show that something belongs to someone. For example; we might say Aynie's homework, Ammar's learning or Sarah's effort. We simply put an apostrophe after the owner and then add an s. For your first challenge, think of something you know that belongs to someone you know and write a phrase using an apostrophe of possession. Here are some examples; CatMonkey's bowl Messi's boots Dragon's fire Sometimes, we can confuse apostrophes of possession and plurals. Remember: Plurals are when you have more than one of a noun and you never add an apostrophe to show more than one of a noun. For your second challenge; I've written some sentences. I would like you to add the apostrophe of possession to

Indefinite Articles

Image
Hello everyone, I hope you've had some fun during the school holidays and that you stayed safe. Today, we are going to learn about indefinite articles. It sounds tricky but it's actually just the proper name for something you already know a and an. These are called indefinite articles because the noun they are related to is not specific. If I ask you to get a pencil, it doesn't matter which pencil you get. Just like if I ask you to get a piece of paper, it really doesn't matter which one. Most of the time we can use a as our indefinite article. In fact, any word that starts with a consonant or consonant sound can have a as its indefinite article. Just a reminder, the consonants are B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z. Sometimes we use an as our indefinite article. In fact, any words that start with a vowel or a vowel sound can have an as its indefinite article. Just a reminder, the vowels are A, E, I, O, U. For today

Conditional Conjunctions

Hello everyone, Today we are going to work on another type of conjunction: conditional conjunctions. Conditional conjunctions are used to show the times when or if something will happen. These are the conditions. In a sentence we start with a piece of information I like playing football  followed by the conditions for that piece of information to be true when it is raining . In that sentence the piece of information is only true when we give it with the matching piece of information. For you first challenge, I have started some sentences for you that you can finish off with a conditional conjunction. The first one is done for you. As always, feel free to email your work to the school email (yr2@harrow.grange.sch.uk) or submit via class charts. I go to school when it is a weekday. I like going to the beach when You have to wait for the green man when I like fruit when You must wash your hands when You can also use if as a conditional conjunction. We would

Subordinating Conjunctions

Hello everyone, Yesterday we looked at co-ordinating conjunctions and today we are going to look at subordinating conjunctions. I know subordinating conjunctions sounds like a tricky term but it's actually something we are quite familiar with; using because and so . We use subordinating conjunctions when we have a main part of the sentence and another part that helps make the main part clear. Normally it's when we have a part of sentence that makes sense on its own,  I like football  and another part that explains  because it is exciting . For your first challenge, I've written some main parts of sentences and I'd like you to use because to start another part of the sentence explaining the part I have written. The first one is done for you. Remember to email your work to the school email (yr2@grange.harrow.sch.uk) or submit via class charts. 1. I like ice-cream because it is delicious. 2. I watch movies because 3. My favourite book is Wild by Emil

Co-ordinating Conjunctions

Hello everyone, Today we are going to have a look at co-ordinating   conjunctions . It sounds like it could be tough and  challenging but it's actually quite simple. In fact, I used two co-ordinating   conjunctions in that last sentence. Did you spot them? They were and and but . And  is quite simple. We use it in a sentence when we need to join two ideas together that are linked. They are normally about the same subject. I like football and baseball. In this sentence we use and because they are both things I like. I went to the shops and the beach. In this sentence we use and because they are both places I went. For your first challenge, try writing 5 sentences using and  as a co-ordinating conjunction. See how funny you can make them and email them to (yr2@grange.harrow.sch.uk) or submit them via class charts. The other co-ordinating conjunction we are quite familiar with is but . But is used when we are linking two ideas that disagree, that's why we chose o

Hidden Adjectives

Hello everyone, Yesterday we looked at simple adjectives that are used to describe  or specify . Today, we are going to look at some adjectives that are a little bit trickier to spot. Have a look at my shoes. I'm sure you remember them from PE lessons as they are pretty hard to forget. There is a lot of adjectives to describe them; pink, bright, shiny, silver and there is also another adjective: running . Running looks like a verb and normally it is but in this example it describes the shoes by telling us what type they are; running shoes . There are lots of other examples; bowling ball, walking stick, climbing frame are all examples of use a word with an - ing suffix as an adjective . For your first challenge, have a look at the sentences below and see if you can spot the adjectives in them.  Warning! One is a trick! One of these sentences has no adjectives! 1. Bake a pie with cooking apples. 2. Don't fall off the climbing frame. 3. Make sure to wear

Adjectives

Hello everyone, Today we are going to be learning about adjectives . Adjectives  are words that describe nouns . If you remember, nouns are people, places and things so we often need to use adjectives to give people more information about those people, places and things. For your first challenge, you're going to play a ten word challenge . Pick something in the place you are right now and use ten words to describe that thing. Remember; it can be a person, place or thing so you describe one of your grown-ups, your kitchen or even your television. See if a grown-up, sibling or someone else in the place you are right now can guess what thing you are describing using your adjectives. I chose something in my house and these are the words that describe it: Can you guess what it is? You can email with your guess to the school email ( yr2@grange.harrow.sch.uk ) small, cute, furry, cheeky, silly, fast, energetic, crazy, hungry, impatient All of the words you used there

Past Progressive Verbs

Hello everyone, Today we are going to try something quite challenging, Past Progressive Verbs . Past progressive verbs are things that happened in the past  but are continuous . When we are writing about these verbs, we are saying that they happened and happened continuously. For example, if I say ' The man fed the birds' it means he did just one action of feeding the birds, but if I say ' The man was feeding the birds' it tells us that he was doing this action continuosly.  You may notice that we change from using the past tense  to the past progressive tense by removing using the word was and using the suffix -ing . This is because the word was is used to tell us the action is in the past tense  and the suffix -ing  is used to tell us the action is continuous. Here are some examples. kicked - - - was kicking watched - - - was watching ran - - - was running For your first challenge; I have a list of past tense verbs that I'd like you t

Past Tense Verbs

Hello everyone, Today we are going to be learning about past tense verbs . Remember - verbs are those doing words that we worked on yesterday and past tense verbs are verbs that show something happened in the past. In the sentence you just read or heard I used the verbs happened and worked  as the past tense of happen and work. You might notice that each of those words has the suffix - ed . Adding this suffix is the most common way to show that a verb is in the past tense and happens with words such as crunch, jump, laugh and bowl which become crunched, jumped, laughed and bowled. For your first challenge, below is a list of words where all you have to do is add an -ed . Try using them in -past tense sentences. If you can use them in a funny sentence, even better! When you've written them you can email them to us using the school email ( yr2@grange.harrow.sch.uk ). if there's any verbs that are new to you - ask someone in the place you are right now to help you fi

Verbs

Image
Hello again everyone, Today we are going to learn about verbs. Verbs are often called 'doing words' because they are words that tell us what someone is or was doing. It can be things like running and jumping that are really easy to spot to things that are harder to spot like thinking  or getting . For your first challenge, I've got a game for you to play with a grown-up, sibling or someone in the place you are right now. You have 1 minute to act out as many different verbs  as you can. See how many you can act out and how many the person you are playing with can guess. You might have seen verbs with lots of different suffixes like -ed or -ing . Today, we are going to focus on root words . Root words are verbs without any suffixes so they aren't happening at a specific time like past tense verbs . Examples of this include jump, skip, hop, think, get, do. For your second challenge, we're going to play A to Z again, except this time you need to try

Plural Nouns

Hello everyone, Today we are going to be learning all about Plural Nouns . Nouns can be singular , meaning there is only one of them or plural , when there is more than one of them. For most words, we can show a plural by adding an s to the end of the word . For words like apple, pumpkin or pie we add an s and they become apples, pumpkins and pies. For words that end with s, ss, sh, ch, x or z adding an es to the end or the word . For words like bus, brush, church, fox or buzz we an es and they become buses, brushes, churches, foxes and buzzes. For some words, we use a completely different word altogether. For words like person and child, we change them completely and they become people and children. For your first challenge, look at the table I've made and make your own one in your Home Learning books or using the computer.  Then, add the nouns I've written in my list to the right categories. I've done some on my table already to show you how to d

Nouns

Hello everyone! We're going to start with some simple grammar. Today, we will be learning about nouns. Nouns are people, places and things . Have a look around you now and you will see lots of nouns. Some might be people, like your grown-ups or siblings. Some might be places like your kitchen or bedroom. Some might be things like your computer or water bottle. For your first challenge, see if you can find an A to Z of nouns where you are right now. That means you try to find one noun that starts with each letter of the alphabet (X is the toughest!). Make sure you get a grown-up to help you as you don't want to collect anything fragile or valuable. When you've found your A to Z, you can send us a list of your items or a photo to -   yr2@grange.harrow.sch.uk Good luck hunting for nouns! There are two types of noun: common and proper . Common nouns are nouns that are not specific, there's lot of them and they are not unique. These can be people like fi
